The tour takes you six miles up the river and return, during which a running commentary is given by your captain/tour guide on both the ecology and a little history of the area.

Over 100 species of birds have been recorded in the Black River morass and many are seen during your trip. The endangered American Crocodile (c.actus) inhabits the area and sightings are very very frequent. The wetland vegetation is of special interest with three species of mangrove, Thatch palms, Royal palms and freshwater swamp forest dominating.

A not-to-be-forgotten experience.

Appleton Estate is the oldest and most famous of all of Jamaica's sugar estates. It is nestled in the fertile Nassau Valley on either side of the Black River in the Southwest of Jamaica. The origins of Appleton Estate date back to 1655 when the English captured Jamaica from the Spaniards. Frances Dickinson, whose grandsons Caleb and Ezekiel were the earliest known owners of the Appleton Estate, took part in that conquest of Jamaica, and it is believed that Appleton Estate was part of the land grant that Dickinson received as reward for his services. Appleton Estate was an established rum-producing sugar plantation by the year 1749, and it has been in continuous operation for two and a half centuries. Today, Appleton Estate comprises a total of nearly 4,614 hectares (11,402 acres) with 1,500 hectares (3707 acres) in sugarcane cultivation. It also has its own sugar factory and rum distillery which are among the most modern and well equipped in Jamaica. The factory can produce up to 160 tons of sugar per day, and the distillery has a production capacity of ten million litres of rum on an annual basis from both pot stills and column stills.

Travel along 3 miles of unspoiled paradise, to a time when sugar was king and rafts transported this precious cargo to merchant ships in the harbour.

A truly relaxing experience.

Dunn's River Falls (6 hrs):

      Cost: 2 Persons: $190.00
         1 Person: $140.00
         Extra Person: $80.00
A stone's throw from Ocho Rios, one of Jamaica's fastest growing resort centres, Dunn's River Falls is unique. Described as a living and growing phenomenon, it continuously regenerates itself from deposits of travertine rock, the result of precipitation of calcium carbonate from the river, as it flows over the falls. The small dome-shaped cataracts are usually associated with thermal spring activity found in limestone caves. This, combined with its location near to the sea, gives Dunn's River the distinction of being the only one of its kind in the Caribbean, if not the world.
